2023 Honda Accord

Even while the 2023 Honda Accord isn’t the first iteration of the venerable mid-size sedan to attempt to pass for a luxury vehicle, it may be the first one to look the part. The 11th-generation model, which was just launched with a sophisticated new design, appears sharper, more contemporary, and better proportioned than anything else in its class. While we lament the loss of the potent 2.0-liter turbocharged upgrade engine, Honda assures us that the hybrid drivetrain is greatly enhanced, and the base 1.5-liter engine remains with improvements to refinement and fuel efficiency. In order to achieve Honda’s goal of having the gas-electric Accord account for 50% of sales, the lineup has been reorganized to place more emphasis on the hybrid model. The 1.5-liter inline-four turbocharged engine and continuously variable automatic transmission used in the nonhybrid LX and EX models still produce 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. (The manual transmission won’t be back; Honda discontinued it midway through the previous generation of the Accord owing to low demand.) The remaining four Accord trims for 2023—Sport, EX-L, Sport-L, and Touring—are all hybrid models using an improved version of the two-motor drivetrain from the Accord hybrid’s predecessor. The two electric motors are now side by side, just like in the new CR-V hybrid, while the Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter inline-four gas engine now has direct fuel injection. 204 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque are produced as a combined output, and Honda believes that this system will feel more responsive than the previous one. Although EPA fuel economy statistics aren’t yet available, they should increase by a few mpg when compared to the 48 mpg combined rating of the existing Accord hybrid. The new Accord is 2.8 inches longer than the outgoing model, but because of its fixed wheelbase, it should ride and handle similarly. That’s okay with us because we appreciate how refined the current Accord is on the road, but Honda does claim to have enhanced chassis rigidity, adjusted the suspension, and broadened the front track by 0.6 inches. All Accords include Normal and Econ drive modes, and the hybrid models also have Sport and Individual drive modes that let drivers adjust various vehicle parameters.
