If the Cherokee’s friendly front end looks familiar, it’s because Jeep hasn’t changed it much since it came out in 2014. That’s how many car years you need to get Social Security. The current KL version of the Cherokee will end in 2023, but the newest old Cherokee will have some new parts under its old skin. Jeep is getting ready to stop making the old Cherokee, but it still has two trim levels and a new engine. This year, both the Altitude Lux and the Trailhawk come with all-wheel drive as standard. Without a bare-bones base trim, the Cherokee’s starting price is now much higher than that of rivals like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Kia Sportage, but Jeep makes up for some of that with standard niceties. The old V-6 engine has been replaced by a new turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and a better fuel economy rate. This engine is only available on the Trailhawk. The Cherokee’s smooth ride and many driver aids aren’t enough to make it very competitive with its newer and cheaper rivals, but it does have better off-road capability than the others and is made by one of the best SUV brands.

What’s Coming in 2023?

For 2023, Jeep makes big changes to the trim levels and engine of its compact crossover, the Cherokee. The Cherokee only comes in two trims now: Altitude Lux and Trailhawk. The base model, which used to come with front-wheel drive as standard, is no longer available, which has a big effect on its starting price. The 271-hp V-6 is also gone. It has been replaced by a 270-hp turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four, which is only offered in the Trailhawk trim, which is designed for off-road use. The Altitude Lux has plush seats, a heated steering wheel, and a remote start as standard features. The KL generation of the current Cherokee, which came out in 2014 and hasn’t changed much since then, will be made until 2023.
