The O2 is collected through an intake at the front of the Mirai, while the hydrogen fuel is sipped from a trio of tanks that gird its undercarriage. The 182-horsepower drivetrain of the sedan’s Mirai fuel cell can be powered by enough electricity to turn the rear wheels placed on a modified Lexus platform. There’s no mistaking the Mirai for one of its incredibly speedy and similarly priced EV competitors, despite the car’s 4,200-pound curb weight being partially concealed by the instant-on nature of its 221 lb-ft of torque. A tiny lithium-ion battery is also placed in the sedan, although its primary purpose is to balance the overall load management by assisting in the recovery of energy from the car’s regenerative braking system.
