Volkswagen’s new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine is the heart of the Taos. The power output is 158 hp, and the torque is 184 lb-ft. The eight-speed automatic is standard on the front-wheel-drive trims, while the seven-speed dual-clutch is standard on the AWD trims. The rear suspension is another area where the front- and all-wheel-drive Taos diverge, with the former employing a torsion-beam setup and the latter a more complex multilink design. The front-wheel-drive Taos only took a tenth of a second longer to reach 60 miles per hour compared to the all-wheel-drive 4Motion during our testing. The typical size for the wheels is 17 but sizes 18 and 19 are also available.
