Every XC40 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that can produce 247 horsepower or 194 horsepower in the B4 version. A 48-volt hybrid system is present in both. The entry-level B4 only has front-wheel drive, while the more powerful B5 pairs only with all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive B5 model reached 60 mph at our test track in 6.1 seconds, which is a fraction of a second faster than the previous T5 model, which reached the same speed in 6.2 seconds. The eight-speed automatic transmission swiftly changes gears while minimizing roughness within the cabin. The rough noise the engine made when the throttle was opened heavily was our only issue. The XC40 can tow 3500 pounds, which is a substantial amount for a small luxury crossover.
Fuel efficiency and actual MPG
The XC40 achieves class-competitive fuel efficiency ratings of 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for the B4 model and 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway for the B5. The XC40 B5 all-wheel drive only achieved 27 mpg on our 75 mph interstate fuel economy route. Given that it competes with the more economical Mercedes-Benz GLB250, which achieved 32 mpg during our tests, it is not a very good performance. Cargo, Comfort, and the Interior
Inside the XC40, a fun and utilitarian design is combined with modern Swedish flair. Even the entry-level Core trim has a very upmarket feel thanks to the cabin’s light and spacious ambiance. The front and back seats both have substantial passenger room. While not nearly as sumptuous and opulent as its more expensive stablemates, the XC60 and XC90, the XC40 are nonetheless practical on the interior, well-made, and wonderfully styled. The Plus trim’s interior features more modern embellishments added by Volvo designers, such as rectilinear vents with floating chrome adjusters and textured metallic trim in place of typical wood inlays. The shift knob on the top-of-the-line Ultimate versions is made of Orrefors crystal, and driftwood trim is used to decorate the outside. The XC40 successfully fit 23 carry-on baggage in our luggage test when its rear seats were folded. Additionally, Volvo has incorporated a variety of innovative cargo-storage elements into the XC40’s interior, including a hook that extends from the glovebox to hold takeaway bags, a cargo area divider, and a detachable waste bin with a hinged door in the center console.

The 9.0-inch touchscreen for Volvo’s Google-based entertainment system is prominently located in the center of the XC40’s dashboard and shines brightly. There are few actual buttons within the cabin because almost everything is controlled by this screen. The primary menus are logically organized, but the on-screen icons are excessively small, making them difficult to utilize when on the go.
