2024 Dodge Durango Review, Specs, Price and Mileage (Brochure)

The 2024 Dodge Durango is a family-friendly, three-row SUV that radiates a level of machismo that most other SUVs just can’t match. Additionally, the Durango puts its money where its racing stripes are when it is outfitted with the optional V-8 engine. Even with the base V-6 engine, the Dodge has a respectable amount of power and, as an added benefit, can haul more than most competitors. Should those two powertrains prove insufficient, Dodge provides absurdly potent SRT versions, ranging from the 475-hp Durango SRT 392 to the 710-hp supercharged Durango SRT Hellcat, which we have reviewed individually. More understated options like the Hyundai Palisade or Kia Telluride, or more recent additions like the Mazda CX-90 and the Toyota Grand Highlander, might be a better fit if the WWE attitude of the Dodge isn’t quite your thing.

Specifications

Engine

Although the optional 360-hp V-8 engine in the Durango can tow up to 8700 pounds, the 295-hp V-6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission are a more economical combination. Naturally, the Durango’s fuel efficiency isn’t better than that of its four-cylinder competitors, but for some consumers, the trade-off between the more enjoyable V-8 and its powerful towing capabilities may be worthwhile. We tested the V-6 and V-8 engines with the optional all-wheel drive and the standard eight-speed automatic transmission. The V-8 Durango reached 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, while the V-6 Durango reached 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. Although the Dodge’s suspension strikes a balance between comfort and sportiness, the SUV-like feel of the steering and braking system never fails to remind you of this. The Durango’s rear-wheel-drive chassis gives it an energetic feel, even though it isn’t very sporty, and its muscle-car image comes through in regular driving. It is a family-friendly SUV that is enjoyable to drive and convenient to live with because it still manages to provide a comfortable ride.

Fuel & MPG

While four-cylinder crossovers are more fuel-efficient, the Durango’s V-6 engine is still competitive when compared to other V-6-powered rivals. According to EPA estimates, the V-6 variant can achieve up to 19 city and 26 highway mpg. At its peak, the V-8 model gets 14 city and 22 highway mpg. The 2020 V-8-powered Durango R/T shocked us by exceeding both the EPA rating (and even that of its V-6-powered variation) and the lighter, more contemporary GMC Acadia V-6 in our highway fuel-economy test. While the V-6-engine Durango achieved 22 mpg, matching its EPA rating, the V-8-powered vehicle only scored 23 mpg. Visit the EPA website to learn more about the Durango’s fuel efficiency.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

While all manufacturers use a spectrum of materials, from low-cost to high-end, some designs, like the Durango’s, are accomplished better than others. Although the designers placed a high value on overall comfort, ergonomics, and material quality, other competitors have more capacity for second and third rows of passengers. The motorist is faced with a set of gauges with red and white writing on a black background. The steering wheel has a classy metal-look design and a thick leather-wrapped rim. The paddle shifters located behind the wheel of our R/T test vehicle clicked happily. When all of the seats in the Durango were folded flat, we could store thirty carry-on bags within the cabin; when all of the seats were in place, we could only accommodate four behind the third row. That’s two better than the Acadia could muster in both categories.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Perched atop the Durango’s contoured dashboard is one of the best infotainment systems available. 8.4-inch screens are standard on base SXT and mid-range GT models; 10.1-inch screens are optional on GT and standard on Citadel and R/T variants. With both screens, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. An optional rear-seat entertainment system adds two more screens and allows you to attach a further two devices via HDMI and RCA connectors. Bluetooth phone calls sounded terrific to us; one caller even mentioned that she could hear the thunderous growl of the V-8 engine.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In addition to the standard backup camera that aids in securely reversing the large vehicle, optional autonomous emergency braking offers an additional degree of security. Visit the websites of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for additional details regarding Durango’s crash test results. Important safety characteristics consist of:

  • Blind-spot detection as standard, with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Accessible automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control is available.
