The 2024 Ford Edge is categorized as a mid-size SUV, but instead of having a third row as its larger sibling, the Explorer, has a two-row configuration that is more roomy and comfortable. The base four-cylinder engine offers good performance, the trunk is spacious, and the cabin is straightforward and well-appointed. The Edge has a sleek, attractive look as well. However, in comparison to rivals like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda Passport, and Jeep Grand Cherokee, it feels antiquated as it has been on sale since 2019 with few updates. The Edge’s beginning price, which is even more than that of superior three-row SUVs like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride, doesn’t help its cause. There is a sporty ST model that adds agility and 335 horsepower from a twin-turbo V-6 engine. However, the ST’s pricing puts the Edge in the same range as its corporate sibling, the Lincoln Nautilus, which has even more power, a more elegant look, and a more luxurious inside.

Although it accelerates erratically, the base model’s 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder should be more than enough for most users. Check the Edge ST box if you’re searching for an SUV that can keep up with a Volkswagen Golf GTI from zero to sixty miles per hour—and quite a few other fast cars as well. It comes with a 335-hp twin-turbo 2.7-litre V-6 and 21-inch wheels shod in summer tires. While it lacks the agility of our favourite crossover, the MazdaCX-9, the Edge ST is nevertheless a fun car to drive and, in contrast to non-ST versions, offers comforting stability when navigating curves. Its ride is agreeable over uneven terrain, and its steering is neatly weighted albeit not very communicative.

The sportier ST model is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while four-cylinder models may achieve up to 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Notably, the city mileage rating for many four-cylinder vehicle variants is just 20 mpg. The four-cylinder ST-Line model underperformed, achieving only 24 mpg on our 75 mph fuel-economy loop. The Edge’s two-row interior is suitable for a road trip or commute, with enough room for four adults. The materials used in the cabin are tastefully chosen, yet there are some panel fit and finish issues; in our test car, we found a few misaligned dashboard components. There is ample space inside for both passengers and luggage, and the overall interior design is modest and straightforward. Should you find it vital to store clutter in the trunk, the two-row-crossover segment is a terrific facilitator. When the back seats were folded, the Edge could fit 29 of our carry-on bags. Although the cargo rooms of its rivals are nearly equal, the Edge’s well-considered storage cubbies and marginally larger cabin could be the deciding factors.
