Park Assist

Principle

Park Assist supports the driver in the following situations:

• When parking sideways parallel to the road: parallel parking.
• When reverse parking transverses to the road, bay parking. The system lines up with the centre of the parking space.
• Depending on the equipment version: when leaving parallel parking spaces

The ultrasonic sensors measure the surroundings on both sides of the vehicle when driv-ing slowly straight forward. Suitable parking spaces are calculated based on detected objects, for example, parked vehicles. The status of the system is displayed.

General

Function
The operating principle and operation of the system is divided into the following steps:

• Parking space search.
• Switch on.
• Parking.

The status of the system and the actions required are shown on the control display.

Parking space search
The parking space search is active whenever the vehicle is driving forward at low speed, even if the system is deactivated. If the system is deactivated, the displays on the control display may be shown in grey.
Park Assist is activated and parking space search is active.
The control display shows suitable parking spaces along the edge of the road next to the vehicle icon. When Park Assist is active, suitable parking spaces are highlighted and an acoustic signal sounds.
When bay or parallel parking spaces are detected, the system automatically selects the appropriate parking method. A selection menu is displayed for parking spaces that are large enough for both parallel and bay parking. In this case, select the desired parking method manually.

Manual transmission
Park Assist calculates the ideal parking line and takes over steering during the parking manoeuvre.

Steptronic transmission
Park Assist calculates the ideal parking line and takes over the following functions during a parking manoeuvre:

• Steering.
• Accelerating and braking.
• Changing gear.

The parking manoeuvre takes place automati-cally.

Safety information

WARNING
The system does not relieve you of your responsibility to assess the traffic situation correctly. Due to system limits, it cannot respond independently and appropriately in all traffic situations. There is a risk of acci-dent. Adapt your driving style to the traffic conditions. In addition, look directly to check the traffic situation and the vehicle surroundings and intervene actively where appropriate.

WARNING
When the trailer tow hitch is in use, the assistance system cannot react correctly if its sensors are obstructed. There is a risk of accident or material damage. Do not use the assistance system in trailer operation or when using the trailer tow hitch, for example with a rear bicycle carrier.

WARNING
The system can steer the vehicle over or onto kerbs. There is a danger of injury or material damage. Observe the traffic situation and intervene actively if the situation warrants it

Sensors
The system is controlled using the following sensors:

• Ultrasonic sensors in the front/rear bumpers.
• Side ultrasonic sensors.

Operating requirements

For measuring parking spaces

• Driving forwards in a straight line up to a maximum speed of approximately 35 km/h, 22 mph.
• Maximum distance from the row of parked vehicles: 1.5 m, 5 ft.

Suitable parking space

Parallel parking:

• Minimum length of a detected object, for example, a parking vehicle: approx. 1 m, approx. 3.3 ft
• Minimum length of gap between two ob-jects: own vehicle length plus approxi-mately 0.8 m, 2.6 ft.
• Minimum depth: approximately 1.5 m, 5 ft.

Bay parking:

• Minimum length of a detected object, for example, a parking vehicle: approx. 1 m, approx. 3.3 ft
• Minimum width of the gap: own vehicle width plus approximately 0.7 m, 2.3 ft.
• Minimum depth: own vehicle length. Drivers must estimate the depth of bay parking spaces themselves. Due to technical limits, the system is only able to gauge the depth of bay parking spaces approxi-mately.

Parking manoeuvre

• The doors and boot lid are closed. Steptronic transmission:
• The driver’s seat belt is fastened.

Switching on/switching off

Switching on the button
Press the Park Assist button. The LED is illuminated.

 

The current status of the parking space search is displayed on the control display.
Park Assist is automatically activated.

 

Switching on with reverse gear

1. Engage reverse gear.
   The current status of the parking space search is displayed on the control display.
2. Activate if necessary: “Park Assist”

Switching on via iDrive
The rear-view camera display or Park Distance Control view must be enabled.

1. Tilt the Controller to the right.
2. Activate Park Assist on the control display: “Park Assist”

Switching off
The system can be switched off manually:
Press the Park Assist button. The LED is extinguished.

 

Status of the system

Grey: the system is not available.
White: the system is available but not activated.

The system is activated.

 

Parking space search is active.

 

Parking manoeuvre is active. The system takes control of the steering.

Switching the acoustic signal for suitable parking spaces on/off

1. “CAR”
2. “Settings”
3. “Driver assistance”
4. “Parking and manoeuvring”
5. “Park Assist”
6. “Alert if parking space detected”

Acoustic Signals of Park Distance Control
Depending on the national market version, an intermittent tone of the Park Distance Control PDC will sound during an automatic parking manoeuvre.
A continuous tone sounds if the distance to a detected object is less than approximately 20 cm, 8 in.

Parking with Park Assist

1. For the parking space search, drive past parked vehicles at a speed of up to approx. 35 km/h, approx. 22 mph and a maximum distance of 1.5 m, approx. 5 ft.
   Parking space search is activated.
   The status of the parking space search and possible parking spaces are shown on the control display.
2. Engage the reverse gear or press the Park As-sist key. Park Assist is activated.
3. To confirm the suggested parking space for the parking manoeuvre, select the parking space on the control display.
   Parking manoeuvre active. The system takes control of the steering.
4. Follow the instructions on the control display.
   Manual transmission:
   For an optimum parking position, wait for the system to steer automatically after changing gear at a standstill.
   Steptronic transmission:
   When the parking manoeuvre is complete, selector lever position P is engaged. Completion of the parking manoeuvre is indicated on the controlled display.
5. Adjust the parking position yourself if necessary.

Cancelling Park Assist manually

You can cancel Park Assist at any time:

• Press the Park Assist button.
• “Park Assist”: select the icon on the control display.

Cancelling Park Assist automatically
The system automatically cancels in the following situations:

• If the driver grips the steering wheel or steers the vehicle.
• On snow-covered or slippery road surfaces, if necessary.
• If it encounters objects that are difficult to negotiate, for example, kerbs.
• If objects appear suddenly.
• Park Distance Control indicates insufficient distances.
• When a maximum number of parking moves or the parking time is exceeded.
• If you switch to other functions on the con-trol display.
• The turn indicator is turned on opposite to the desired parking side.

Manual transmission:

• If a gear is selected, which does not correspond to the notice on the controlled display.
• At speeds over approximately 10 km/h, 6 mph.

Steptronic transmission:

• If the boot lid is open.
• If doors are open.
• If the parking brake is applied.
• If you accelerate.
• The brake pedal remains depressed for longer while the vehicle is stationary.
• When the driver’s seat belt is unfastened. A Check Control message is shown.

Continuing the parking manoeuvre
You may be able to resume a cancelled parking manoeuvre.
To do this, reactivate Park Assist and follow the instructions on the control display.

System limits

Safety information

WARNING
Due to system limitations, the system may not respond at all or may respond too late, incorrectly or for no reason. There is a risk of accident or material damage. Observe the information on the system limits and intervene actively if necessary.

No parking assistance
Park Assist does not assist in the following situations:

• In tight bends.
• In trailer operation.
• With parking spaces which are marked by lines on the floor only. The system orients itself on objects.
• In angled parking spaces.

System limits of the sensors

Functional limitations
The system may have restricted functionality in situations such as the following:

• On uneven road surfaces, for example, gravel roads.
• On slippery surfaces.
• On steep uphill or downhill gradients.
• If leaves have collected or snow has drifted or been piled up in the parking space.
• If the emergency spare wheel has been fitted.
• If an already measured parking space changes.
• If there are ditches or sudden drops, for example at a quayside.
• In some cases, parking spaces may be detected that are not suitable or suitable parking spaces may not be detected.

Malfunction
A Check Control message is shown.
Park Assist has failed. Have the system checked by an authorised Service Partner another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop.
