Vehicle Features and Options

This chapter describes all standard, country-specific, and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features and functions that are not necessarily available in your vehicle, e.g., due to the selected options or country versions. This also applies to safety-related functions and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.

Washing the Vehicle

General information
Regularly remove foreign objects such as leaves in the area below the windshield when the hood is raised. Wash your vehicle frequently, particularly in win‐ter. Intense contamination and road salt can damage the vehicle.

Steam cleaner and high pressure

Cleaner

Safety information
NOTICE
When cleaning with high-pressure cleaners, components can be damaged due to the pressure or temperatures being too high. There is a risk of damage to property, among other potential damage. Maintain sufficient distance and do not spray too long continuously. Follow the operating instructions for high-pressure cleaners.

Distances and Temperature

• Maximum temperature: 140 ℉/60 ℃.
• Minimum distance from sensors, cameras, seals 12 inches/30 cm.
• Minimum distance from glass sunroof: 31.5 in/80 cm.

• Automatic Washing Systems or Car Washes

  NOTICE
  Improper use of automatic washing systems or car washes can cause damage to the vehicle. There is a risk of damage to property, among other potential damage. Follow the following instructions:

1. Give preference to cloth car washes or those that use soft brushes in order to avoid paint damage.
2. Do not drive through a car wash with guide rails higher than 4 in/10 cm to avoid damage to the body.
3. Observe the tire width of the guide rail to avoid damage to tires and rims.
4. Fold in exterior mirrors to avoid damage to the exterior mirrors.
5. Deactivate the wiper and, if necessary, rain sensor to avoid damage to the window wiper system.

Driving into a car wash with a Steptronic transmission

Safety Information
NOTICE
Selector lever position P is automatically engaged when standby state is switched off. There is a risk of damage to property, among other potential damage. Do not switch the standby state off in car washes.

General Information
In a car wash, the vehicle must be able to roll freely.
Some car washes do not permit persons in the vehicle. The vehicle cannot be locked from the outside when in selector lever position N. A signal sounds when an attempt is made to lock the vehicle.

Driving out of a car wash

Ensure that the vehicle key is in the car. Turn on drive readiness.

Headlights

Do not rub wet headlights dry and do not use abrasive or acidic cleaning agents. Soak areas that have been dirtied, for instance from insects, with auto shampoo and wash off with water. Thaw ice with de-icing spray; do not use an ice scraper.

After washing the vehicle

After washing the vehicle, apply the brakes briefly to dry them; otherwise, the braking effect can be reduced. The heat generated during braking dries brake discs and brake pads and protects them against corrosion. Completely remove all residues on the windows, to minimize loss of visibility due to smearing and to reduce wiper noises and wiper blade wear.

Vehicle care products

General information

BMW recommends using vehicle care and cleaning products from BMW. Suitable vehicle care products are available from a dealer’s service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.

Safety information

Warning
Cleansers can contain substances that are dangerous and harmful to your health. There is a risk of injury. When cleaning the interior, open the doors or windows. Only use products in‐tended for cleaning vehicles. Follow the instructions on the container.

Vehicle paintwork

General information
Regular vehicle care contributes to driving safety and value retention. Environmental influences in areas with elevated air pollution or natural contaminants, such as tree resin or pollen can affect the vehicle paintwork. Tailor the frequency and extent of your vehicle care to these influences. Corrosive substances such as spilled fuel, oil, grease or bird droppings, must be removed immediately to prevent the finish from being altered or discolored.

Matte paintwork

Only use cleaning and care products suitable for vehicles with matte paintwork.

Caring for the convertible top

General information
The appearance and life of the convertible top depend on correct vehicle care and operation.

1. Clean the headliner with a microfiber cloth. Dampen the cloth lightly with water, if needed.
2. Do not soak the headliner.
3. To avoid water stains, spots of mold, and chafe marks, do not keep the convertible top enclosed in its case for a long period of time. Do not fold up the convertible top or stow it in its case if it is wet or frozen.
4. Remove any water stains that have appeared on the headliner using a microfiber cloth and an interior cleaner.
5. When the vehicle is parked in enclosed areas for lengthy periods, ensure that the area is well-ventilated.
6. Park the vehicle in the shade to protect it from intensive solar radiation so that color, rubber, and fabric are not affected.
7. Remove bird droppings immediately as their corrosive effect will otherwise attack the convertible top and damage the rubber seals.
8. Hard-to-remove tree sap or bird droppings can be removed from the convertible top with a special tree sap remover and a soft brush.

Safety information

NOTICE
Spot remover, paint thinner, solvents, gasoline, or similar can damage the convertible top or the rubber coating. There is a risk of damage to property, among other potential damage. To remove spots on the convertible top, use only suitable cleaning agents, for instance, a special convertible top cleaning agent.

Cleaning the convertible top

To remove heavy contamination, especially for light-colored convertible tops, use a special convertible top cleaning agent.

Proceed as follows when cleaning:

1. Spray the convertible top with the convertible top cleaning agent. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Make the convertible top cleaning agent foam up using a well-saturated sponge, moving it in circular motions.
3. Rinse the vehicle with ample amounts of water or finish washing the vehicle in the car wash. Follow notes regarding automatic washing systems or car washes.

Treat the convertible top with an impregnating agent after it has been washed three to five times. Suitable cleaning agents and vehicle care products are available from a dealer’s service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.
