However, the passenger’s seat lap/shoulder belt retractor operates in two modes: emer-gency locking mode, and for child-restrain t systems, automatic locking mode. If yo u must use the passenger seat for a child, slid e the passenger seat as far back as possible and make sure any child restraint system i s secured properly.

1. Relying on the air bags alone could lea d to more severe injuries in a collision. The air bags work with your seat belt to restrain you properly. In some collisions , the air bags won’t deploy at all. Always wear your seat belt even though you have air bags.
2. In a collision, you and your passengers can suffer much greater injuries if yo u are not properly buckled up. You ca n strike the interior of your vehicle or other passengers, or you can be thrown out o f the vehicle. Always be sure you an d others in your vehicle are buckled up properly.
3. It is dangerous to ride in a cargo area, inside or outside of a vehicle. In a collision, people riding in these areas are more likely to be seriously injured or killed.
4. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped wit h seats and seat belts.
5. Be sure everyone in your vehicle is in a seat and using a seat belt properly. Occupants, including the driver, should always wear their seat belts whether or not an air bag is also provided at their seating position to minimize the risk of severe injury or death in the event of a crash.

4. Never allow children to slide the shoulder belt behind them or under their arm.
5. You should read the instruction s provided with your child restraint to make sure that you are using it properly.
6. All occupants should always wear their lap and shoulder belts properly.
7. The driver and front passenger seat s should be moved back as far as practical to allow the front air bags room to inflate.
8. Do not lean against the door or window . If your vehicle has side air bags, an d deployment occurs, the side air bags will inflate forcefully into the space between occupants and the door and occupant s could be injured.
9. If the air bag system in this vehicle needs to be modified to accommodate a disabled person, refer to the “Customer Assistance” section for customer service contact information.

1. Never place a rear-facing child restraint in front of an air bag. A deploying passenger front air bag can cause death or serious injury to a child 12 years o r younger, including a child in a rear-facing child restraint.
2. Never install a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat of a vehicle. Only use a rear-facing child restraint in the rea r seat. If the vehicle does not have a rea r seat, do not transport a rear-facing child restraint in that vehicle.

Pregnant women should always wear sea t belts. Ask your doctor for specific recom-mendations. The lap belt should be worn SNUGLY AN D AS LOW AS POSSIBLE OVER THE HIPS. The shoulder belt should be worn across you r shoulder properly, but never across the stomach area.

Emergency Locking Mode
When the seat belt is fastened, it will always be in the emergency locking mode.
In the emergency locking mode, the bel t remains comfortable on the occupant an d the retractor will lock in position during a collision. If the belt is locked and cannot be pulle d out, retract the belt once, and then tr y pulling it out slowly. If this fails, pull the bel t strongly one time and loosen, then pull it out again slowly.

Seat Belt With Automatic Locking Mode
When the seat belt is fastened, it will always be in the emergency locking mode until it i s switched to automatic locking mode b y pulling it all the way out to its full length.
If the belt feels tight and hinders comfort-able movement while the vehicle is stoppe d or in motion, it may be in the automati c locking mode because the belt has bee n pulled too far out.
To return the belt to the more comfortable emergency locking mode, wait until the vehicle has stopped in a safe, level area, retract the belt fully to convert it back t o emergency locking mode and then extend i t around you again.

Automatic Locking Mode
Always use the automatic locking mode t o keep the child-restraint system from shifting to an unsafe position in the event of an accident. To enable seat belt automatic locking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it a s instructed on the child restraint system. I t will retract down to the child restraint system and stay locked on it.

WARNING

1. Never place a rear-facing child restraint in front of an air bag. A deploying passenger front air bag can cause death or serious injury to a child 12 years o r younger, including a child in a rear-facing child restraint.
2. Never install a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat of a vehicle. Only use a rear-facing child restraint in the rea r seat. If the vehicle does not have a rea r seat, do not transport a rear-facing child restraint in that vehicle.
3. The seat belt assembly must be replaced if the switchable Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) feature or any other sea t belt function is not working properly when checked according to the procedures in the Service Manual.
4. Failure to replace the seat belt assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions.
5. Do not use the Automatic Locking Mode to restrain occupants who are wearing the seat belt or children who are using booster seats. The locked mode is only used to install rear-facing or forward-facing child restraints that have a harness for restraining the child.

Seat Belt Warning Systems
The LED on dashboard trim turns on if the driver or passenger’s seat is occupied an d the seat belt is not fastened with the ignition cycled to on.
If the driver or passenger’s seat belt is unfastened (only when the passenger seat is occupied) and the vehicle is driven at a speed faster than about 12 mph (20 km/h), theLED flashes. After a short time, the LED stops flashing, but remains illuminated. If a seat belt remains unfastened, the LE D flashes again for a given period of time. I n this case, fasten the seat belt.

Seat Belt Pretensioner
For optimum protection, the driver an d passenger seat belts are equipped with pretensioner and load limiting systems. For both these systems to work properly yo u must wear the seat belt properly.
The seat belt pretensioners are designed to deploy in moderate or severe frontal, near frontal collisions. In addition, during a side collision, the pretensioner operates on the side in which the collision occurs. The pretensioners operate differently depending on what types of air bags are equipped. For details on the seat belt pretensioner operation, refer to the “SRS Air Bag Deployment Criteria” paragraph in this chapter. When a collision is detected, the pretensioners deploy simultaneously with the air bags. For deployment details, refer to the “SRS Air Bag Deployment Criteria” para-graph in this chapter.
The seat belt retractors remove slack quickly as the air bags are expanding. Any time the air bags and seat belt pretensioners have fired they must be replaced.

With Passenger Occupant Classification System
In addition, the pretensioner system for the passenger, like the front and side passenger Air Bag, is designed to only deploy when the passenger occupant classification sensor detects a passenger sitting on the passenger’s seat.

NOTE:

1. These devices are not a substitute for proper seat belt placement by the occupant. The seat belt still must be worn snugly and positioned properly.
2. The pretensioners are triggered by the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC). Like the air bags, the pretensioners are single use items. A deployed pretensioner or a deployed air bag must be replaced imme-diately.

Load Limiter
The load limiting system releases bel t webbing in a controlled manner to reduc e belt force on the occupant’s chest.
While the most severe load on a seat bel t occurs in frontal collisions, the load limite r has an automatic mechanical function an d can activate in any accident mode with suffi-cient occupant movement.
Even if the pretensioners have not fired, the load limiting function must be checked by a n authorized dealer.
