Parking Brake Warning Warning Light Inspection/Low Brake Fluid Level Warning

Parking Brake Warning / Warning Light Inspection

The light illuminates when the parking brake is applied with the ignition switched to START or ON. It turns off when the parking brake is fully released.

Low Brake Fluid Level Warning

If the brake warning light remains illuminated even though the parking brake is released, the brake fluid may be low or there could be a problem with the brake system. Park the vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact an authorized dealer.

NOTE:

o Do not drive with the brake system warning light illuminated. Contact an authorized dealer to have the brakes inspected as soon as possible. Driving with the brake system warning light illuminated is dangerous. It indicates that your brakes may not work at all or that they could completely fail at any time. If this light remains illuminated, after checking that the parking brake is fully released, have the brakes inspected immediately.

o The effectiveness of the braking may diminish so you may need to push the brake pedal more strongly than normal to stop the vehicle.

Stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact an authorized dealer.

Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) System Warning
If the EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) control unit determines that some components are operating incorrectly, the control unit may illuminate the brake system warning light and the Anti Lock Brake System (ABS) warning light simultaneously. The problem is likely to be the electronic brake force distribution system. Stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact an authorized dealer.

NOTE:

o Do not drive with both the ABS warning light and brake warning light illuminated. Contact an authorized dealer to have the brakes inspected as soon as possible. Driving when the brake system warning light and ABS warning light are illuminated simultaneously is dangerous.

o When both lights are illuminated, the rear wheels could lock more quickly in an emergency stop than under normal circumstances.

If the ABS warning light stays on while you’re driving, when the ABS control unit has detected a system malfunction. If this occurs, your brakes will function normally as if the vehicle had no ABS. Should this happen contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

NOTE:

o When the engine is jump-started to charge the battery, uneven RPM occurs and the ABS warning light may illuminate. If this occurs, it is the result of the weak battery and does not indicate an ABS malfunction. Recharge the battery.

o The brake assist system does not operate while the ABS warning light is illuminated.

Malfunction Indicator Light

If this light illuminates while driving, the vehicle may have a problem. It is important to note the driving conditions when the light illuminated and contact an authorized dealer.

The malfunction indicator light may illuminate in the following cases:

o The engine’s electrical system has a problem.

o The emission control system has a problem.

o The fuel tank level is very low or approaching empty.

o The fuel-filler cap is missing or not tightened securely.

If the malfunction indicator light remains on, or it flashes continuously, do not drive at high speeds and contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING
A malfunctioning catalytic converter, a s referenced above, can reach highe r temperatures than in normal operatin g conditions. This can cause a fire if yo u drive slowly or park over flammabl e substances such as dry plants, wood, cardboard, etc. This could result in deat h or serious injury to the driver, occupants o r others.

CAUTION
Prolonged driving with the Malfunctio n Indicator Light (MIL) on could caus e damage to the engine control system. I t also could affect fuel economy an d driveability. If the MIL is flashing, sever e catalytic converter damage and power los s will soon occur. Immediate service i s required.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Light If Equipped

The warning light switches on and a message is displayed to indicate that the tire pressure is lower than the recommended value and/or that slow pressure loss is occurring. In these cases, optimal tire duration and fuel consumption may not be guaranteed. Should one or more tires be in the condition mentioned above, the display will show the indications corresponding to each tire in sequence.

NOTE:

Do not continue driving with one or more flat tires as handling may be compromised. Stop the vehicle, avoiding sharp braking and steering. Repair immediately using the dedicated tire repair kit and contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, you should determine the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.

As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle’s handling and stopping ability.

Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver’s responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale.

The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one minute and then remain continuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunction exists. When the malfunction indicator is illuminated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended. TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from functioning properly. Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function properly.

CAUTION
The TPMS has been optimized for th e original equipment tires and wheels. TPMS pressures and warning have bee n established for the tire size equipped o n your vehicle. Undesirable system operatio n or sensor damage may result when usin g replacement equipment that is not of th e same size, type, and/or style. Aftermarke t wheels can cause sensor damage. Usin g aftermarket tire sealants may cause th e Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS ) sensor to become inoperable. After usin g an aftermarket tire sealant it i s recommended that you take your vehicle t o an authorized dealer to have your senso r function checked.

Power Steering Malfunction Indicator Light

The light illuminates if the electric power steering has a malfunction. If the light illuminates, stop the vehicle in a safe place and do not operate the steering wheel. There is no problem if the light turns off after a while. Contact an authorized dealer if the light illuminates continuously.

NOTE:

o If the indicator light illuminates, the power steering will not operate normally. If this happens, the steering wheel can still be operated, however, the operation may feel heavy compared to normal, or the steering wheel could vibrate when turning.

o Repeatedly jerking the steering wheel left and right while the vehicle is stopped or moving extremely slowly will cause the power steering system to go into protective mode which will make the steering feel heavy, but this does not indi- cate a problem. If this occurs, park the vehicle safely and wait several minutes for the system to return to normal.
