The headlamp bulb in the 2009–2021 Harley-Davidson Dyna series was a key part of making the road visible to users and defining the look of these famous American cruisers. The Harley-Davidson company designed headlamp bulbs that were both useful and stylish. These bulbs not only made the motorcycles easier to see at night and in bad weather, but they also added to their unique look. During this time, Harley-Davidson introduced new headlight bulb technologies, such as halogen and LED options, that were meant to make the bikes safer and look better. These bulbs often had classic chrome or black finishes that were typical of Harley-Davidson products and went well with the general look of the Dyna motorcycles. So, the headlight bulb became an important part that not only lit the road ahead but also added to the classic look and uniqueness of these popular cruisers, giving riders the confidence to drive at night or during the day while making a statement on the open road.

HEADLAMP

See Figure 39. The headlamp assembly uses replaceable quartz halogen bulb(s).

Refer to Table 14 for bulbs. See a Harley-Davidson dealer or service manual for bulb replacement.

CAUTION
When replacement is required, use only the specified sealed beam unit or bulb, available from a Harley-Davidson dealer. An improper wattage sealed beam or bulb, can cause charging system problems. (00209a)

CAUTION
Never touch the quartz bulb. Fingerprints will etch the glass and decrease bulb life. Grab the bulb with paper or a clean, dry cloth. Failure to do so could result in bulb damage. (00210a)

WARNING
Handle bulb carefully and wear eye protection. Bulb contains gas under pressure, which, if not handled carefully, could cause serious eye injury. (00062b)

HEADLAMP ALIGNMENT

WARNING
The automatic-on headlamp feature provides increased visibility of the rider to other motorists. Be sure the headlamp is on at all times. Poor visibility of rider to other motorists can result in death or serious injury. (00030b)

NOTE
Vehicles with multiple beam headlamps that are individually aimed should be adjusted so both lamps converge into one pattern.

  1. Verify that front and rear tire inflation pressures are correct and that suspension is adjusted to the weight of the principal rider. See SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Fill fuel tank or add ballast to equal the weight of the fuel needed.
    NOTE
See Figure 40. To aid in properly placing the motorcycle, a perpendicular line (1) can be drawn on the floor. For best results, choose an area with minimum light.
  3. See Figure 40. Draw a vertical line (2) on the wall.
  4. Position motorcycle so that front axle is meters) from wall.
    NOTE
As the weight of the rider will compress the suspension slightly, have a person whose weight is approximately the same as that of the principal rider sit on the motorcycle.
  5. With the vehicle laden and upright, point the front wheel straight forward at wall and measure the distance (4) from the floor to the center of the HIGH BEAM bulb.
  6. Draw a horizontal line (5) through the vertical line on the wall that is 2.1 in. (53.3 mm) lower than the measured bulb centerline.

    NOTE
As the weight of the rider will compress the suspension slightly, have a person whose weight is approximately the same as that of the principal rider sit on the motorcycle.
  6. See Figure 40. Verify headlamp alignment. Turn the ignition switch to IGNITION and set the headlamp switch to HIGH beam.
    • The center of the hot spot (brightest area of light beam) should be centered where the two lines inter-sect.
    • Adjust headlamp alignment if necessary.

HEADLAMP ADJUSTMENT

  1. See Figure 41 (FXDF) or Figure 42 (other models). Loosen horizontal adjusting bolt (2) to adjust the headlamp beam side to side. Tighten bolt to 25-30 ft-lbs (33.9-40.7 Nm).
  2. Loosen nut on the vertical adjusting bolt (1) to adjust the headlamp beam up or down. Tighten bolt to 25-30 ft-lbs (33.9-40.7 Nm).

  2. Push in bulb and rotate counterclockwise. Pull bulb from the socket.
  3.  Inspect condition of the electrical contacts in the socket. If necessary, clean with a small wire brush and electrical contact cleaner.
  4. Coat the base of a new bulb with ELECTRICAL CONTACT GREASE (Part No. 99861-90).
  5. Orient index pins on new bulb with pin guides inside bulb socket. Push bulb in and turn it clockwise to lock in place.
  6. Snap the lens cap back into the lamp holder. Rotate the lens to position notch at the bottom of lamp.
    WARNING
Be sure that all lights and switches operate properly before operating the motorcycle. Low visibility of rider can result in death or serious injury. (00316a)
  7. Turn the ignition on and test for proper turn signal operation.

NOTE
If the turn signal or running lamp will not light after replacing a bulb, check the wiring, the ground at the socket and/or the switch.
