Introduction

The automobile sector has seen a considerable transformation due to the quick development of technology, which has also changed how we drive and improved vehicle safety. The Rear Cross-Traffic Collision system is one such cutting-edge safety technology that tries to stop accidents while backing up by warning drivers of approaching vehicles or pedestrians. This cutting-edge technology is included in the Kia Soul 2023, a well-liked compact car noted for its distinctive style and functionality, to give drivers an extra measure of security. This essay will examine the Kia Soul 2023’s Rear Cross-Traffic Collision system in detail, examining its features, advantages, and effects on overall traffic safety.

The technology immediately informs the driver via a combination of audio and visual cues when it detects an oncoming vehicle or pedestrian. To alert the driver to a potential hazard, this often comprises warning sounds and visual signs on the dashboard or rearview mirror of the vehicle. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision system’s early alerts allow drivers the time to respond and perform appropriate evasive actions, lowering the chance of crashes and enhancing overall road safety. The technique for preventing rear cross-traffic collisions has many advantages. First of all, it greatly improves the driver’s situational awareness, especially in circumstances when blind spots could obstruct their view. The device serves as an extra set of eyes, keeping watch over places that are frequently difficult to observe, such as congested parking lots or perpendicular parking spaces. This function makes reversing maneuvers safer and more effective by preventing accidents brought on by unanticipated oncoming traffic or pedestrians.

The blind spot detection range varies relative to the approaching vehicle speed.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist monitors approaching cross traffic from the left and right side of the vehicle when your vehicle is approaching.
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist may activate Electronic Stability Control in certain situations.

WARNING

  1. Always be aware of road and traffic conditions while driving and be alert for unexpected situations even though Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist are operating.
  2. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist are supplemental functions to assist you. Do not entirely rely on the functions. Always pay attention, while driving, for your safety.
  3. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist are not substitutes for proper and safe driving. Always drive safely and use caution when backing up the vehicle.

Setting and activating Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning/Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
The driver can activate the functions by placing the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position and by selecting:

  1. Go to the ‘User Settings in the cluster → Driver Assistance → Blind-Spot Safety → Rear Cross-Traffic Safety’.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning is ready to be activated when ‘Rear Cross-Traffic Safety’ is selected. When the vehicle is turned off then on again, the functions will be ready to be activated. When the function is initially turned on and when the engine is turned off and then on again, the warning light will illuminate for 3 seconds on the outer side view mirror.

Setting the initial warning activation time
The driver can select the initial warning activation time in the User Settings in the LCD display by selecting:

  1. ‘User Settings in the cluster → Driver Assistance → Warning Timing’.

The options for the initial Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning include the following:

  1. Normal: When this option is selected, the initial Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning is activated normally. If this setting feels sensitive, change the option to ‘Late’.
  2. Late: Select this warning activation time when the traffic is light and you are driving in a low speed.

NOTICE
If you change the warning timing, the warning time of other systems may change. Always be aware before changing the warning timing.

Setting the warning volume of Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning
The driver can select the warning volume of the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning by selecting:

  1. Go to the ‘User Settings → Driver Assistance → Warning Volume → High/Medium/Low’.

NOTICE
If you change the warning volume, the warning volume of other systems may change. Always be aware before changing the warning volume.
For more details, refer to “LCD display” on pages 4-53.

Operating conditions
The system will activate when the vehicle speed is below 7 mph (10 km/h) and with the shift lever in R (Reverse).
The function will not activate when the vehicle speed exceeds 7 mph (10 km/h). The function will activate again when the speed is below 5 mph (8 km/h). The function detecting range is approximately 1~82 ft (0.5~25 m). An approaching vehicle will be detected if the vehicle speed is within 5~26.5 mph (8~43 km/h). Note that the detecting range may vary under certain conditions. As always, use caution and pay close attention to your surroundings when backing up your vehicle.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warn-ing alert
If the vehicle detected by the sensors approaches from the rear left/right side of your vehicle, the warning chime will sound, the warning light on the outer side view mirror will blink and a message will appear on the LCD display.

After brake control is activated, the driver must immediately depress the brake pedal and check the surroundings.

  1. The brake activation by the function lasts for about 2 seconds. The driver must pay attention as the brake is disengaged after 2 seconds.
  2. The brake control by the function is canceled if the driver depresses the brake pedal with sufficient power.
  3. Brake control is activated once for each right/left approach after shifting the shift lever to R (Reverse).

The brake control may not operate properly according to the status of the ESC (Electronic Stability Control).

The same warning message is displayed on the instrument cluster when:

  1. The ESC warning light is on.
  2. ESC is engaged in a different function.

CAUTION

  1. When the operation condition of the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning function is met, the warning will occur every time a vehicle approaches the side or rear of your stopped (0 mph (0 km/h) vehicle speed) vehicle.
  2. The functions warning or brake may not operate properly if the left or right of your vehicle’s rear bumper is blocked by a vehicle or obstacle.
  3. The driver should always use extreme caution while operating the vehicle, whether or not the warning light on the outer side view mirror illuminates or there is a warning alarm.
  4. Playing the vehicle audio system at high volume may prevent occupants from hearing the function’s warning sounds.
  5. If any other warning sound, such as seat belt warning chime, is already generated, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning warning may not sound.

WARNING

  1. Drive safely even though the vehicle is equipped with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist. Do not solely rely on the function but check your surrounding when backing the vehicle up.
