Vehicle recognition

Cruise Control 33Some vehicles ahead in your lane cannot be recognized by the sensor as follows:

  • Narrow vehicles such as motorcycles or bicycles
  • Vehicles offset to one side
  • Slow-moving vehicles or sudden-decelerating vehicles
  • Stopped vehicles
  • Vehicles with small rear profiles such as trailers with no loads

A vehicle ahead cannot be recognized correctly by the sensor if any of following occurs:

  • When the vehicle is pointing upwards due to overloading in the trunk(tailgate)
  • While making turns by steering
  • When driving to one side of the lane
  • When driving on narrow lanes or on curves

Adjust your vehicle speed by depressing the brake pedal according to the road and driving conditions ahead.

Cruise Control 34

  • Your vehicle may accelerate when a vehicle ahead of you disappears.
  • When you are warned that the vehicle ahead of you is not detected, drive with caution.Cruise Control 35
  • When vehicles are at a standstill and the vehicle in front of you changes to the next lane, be careful when your vehicle starts to move because it may not immediately recognize the stopped vehicle in front of you.

In this case, you must maintain a safe braking distance, and if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce your driving speed in order to maintain a safe distance.

Cruise Control 36

  • Always look out for pedestrians when your vehicle is maintaining a distance with the vehicle ahead.Cruise Control 37
  • Always be cautious when approaching vehicles that are taller with higher clearance, or vehicles carrying loads that stick out of the back of the vehicle.

WARNING
When using Smart Cruise Control take the following pre-cautions:

  • If an emergency stop is necessary, you must apply the brakes. Smart Cruise Control may not be able to completely stop the vehicle or avoid a collision in every situation.

FAQs

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise Control is a system that automatically controls the speed of a vehicle. In the 2022 Kia Sportage, it allows the driver to set a speed, and then the vehicle maintains that speed without the driver having to keep their foot on the accelerator.

How do I activate Cruise Control on my 2022 Kia Sportage?

You can activate Cruise Control by pressing the cruise button on your steering wheel, then set your desired speed using the SET/- or RES/+ buttons once you have reached that speed.

Can I adjust the speed after setting the Cruise Control?

Yes, you can adjust the speed by pressing the SET/- to slow down or RES/+ to speed up. Each press typically changes the speed by 1 mph.

What should I do if I want to cancel Cruise Control?

You can cancel Cruise Control by pressing the cancel button on the steering wheel or by depressing the brake pedal.

Will Cruise Control work at any speed?

Cruise Control is usually effective within a certain range of speeds, often around 20 mph to the vehicle’s top speed. Refer to the Sportage owner’s manual for the exact speed range.

What is Smart Cruise Control?

Smart Cruise Control is an advanced version of Cruise Control that not only maintains a set speed but also adjusts the speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. It uses radar and sometimes cameras to monitor traffic conditions.

How does Smart Cruise Control differ from standard Cruise Control?

Smart Cruise Control uses sensors to adapt to the traffic conditions, slowing down and speeding up automatically to keep a safe following distance, while standard Cruise Control maintains a set speed regardless of traffic conditions.

How do I set the following distance on Smart Cruise Control?

There should be buttons on the steering wheel to adjust the following distance. It’s typically represented by car icons with varying lengths representing different following distances.

What happens with Smart Cruise Control if the traffic comes to a complete stop?

Many Smart Cruise Control systems, like the one likely in the 2022 Sportage, can bring the vehicle to a complete stop and resume following when traffic moves again. This feature is often termed “Stop & Go” or “Full-Stop” capability.

Is Smart Cruise Control safe to use in all driving conditions?

While SCC is designed to be safe and effective in a wide range of driving conditions, it is not recommended in inclement weather, in heavy traffic where stop-and-go driving is frequent, or on winding roads where the radar may not have a clear view of the vehicle ahead.

What do I do if the Smart Cruise Control system is not working properly?

If SCC is not working as expected, it could be due to sensor issues, poor weather conditions, or other factors. Check the owner’s manual for troubleshooting tips, ensure that sensors are clean and unobstructed, and consider having the system checked by a professional if problems persist.
