Occupants Restraint Systems

The listed occupant’s restraint systems are some of the most important safety features in your vehicle:

  1. Three-point seat belts (also called lap-shoulder belts) for the driver and all passengers.
  2. Front airbags for driver and passenger.
  3. Seat-mounted side airbags for the driver and front passenger.
  4. An energy-absorbing steering column and steering wheel.
  5. Seat belts incorporate a pretension that may enhance occupant protection by managing the energy created during an impact.
  6. All seat belt retractors are equipped with load-limiting devices which control the seat belt reeling out so as to adjust the force exerted on the shoulders while the seat belt is in restraining mode.
  7. Rear seat belts include Automatic Locking Retractors (ALR), which lock the seat belt webbing into position by extending the belt all the way out and then adjusting the belt to the desired length to restrain a child seat or secure a large item in a seat.

To carry children up to 12 years old or under 1.5 m (5 ft) in height, you must use an adequate child restrain system that can be fixed with the three-point seat belts or the Isofix anchorages on the rear seats.
Please pay close attention to the information in this section. It tells you how to use your restraint system properly, to keep you and your passengers as safe as possible.

WARNING!
In an accident, all occupants can suffer much greater injuries if not properly buckled up. You can strike the interior of your vehicle or other occupants or you can be thrown out of the vehicle. Always be sure you and others in your vehicle are buckled up properly. Buckle up even though you are an excellent driver, even on short trips. Someone on the road may be a poor driver and cause an accident that includes you. This can happen far away from home or on your own street.

Statistics report that seat belts save lives and reduce the seriousness of injuries in an accident. Some of the worst injuries happen when people are thrown from the vehicle. Seat belts reduce the possibility of ejection and the risk of injury caused by striking the inside of the vehicle. Everyone in a vehicle should be belted at all times.

Three-Point Seat Belts
All seating positions in your vehicle are equipped with combination lap-shoulder belts.
The belt retractor is designed to lock during very sudden stops or impacts. This feature allows the shoulder part of the belt to move freely with you under normal conditions, conforming perfectly to the body of the occupants. However, in an accident, the belt will lock and reduce your risk of striking the inside of the vehicle or being thrown out. The driver is responsible for respecting, and ensuring that all the other occupants of the car also observe the local regulations concerning the use of seat belts. Always fasten the seat belts before starting the vehicle.

WARNING:

  1. It is forbidden and dangerous to travel in a cargo area. In an accident, people travelling in these areas are more likely to be seriously injured or killed.
  2. Do not allow any person to travel in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and seat belts.
  3. Be sure all passengers are in a seat and using a seat belt properly.
  4. Wearing a seat belt improperly is dangerous. Seat belts are designed to go around the large bones of your body. These are the strongest parts of your body and can best absorb the impact of an accident.
  5. Wearing your belt in the wrong place could make your injuries in an accident much worse. You might suffer internal injuries, or you could even slide out of part of the belt. Follow these instructions to wear your seat belt safely and to keep your passengers safe, too.
  6. Two people should never be belted into a single seat belt. People belted together can crash into one another in an accident, hurting one another severely. Never use a lap/shoulder belt for more than one person, no matter what their size.
  7. Remember that, in the event of an accident, the rear seat passengers not wearing the seat belts are not only subject to personal injuries but also represent a serious danger for the front seat occupants.

Three-Point Seat Belts Use Instructions

  1. The seat belt latch plate is on the rear door pillar, above the seat on the external side.
  2. Hold the latch plate and pull the belt across you, make the belt go around your body and when the belt is long enough to fit, insert the latch plate into the buckle until you hear a “click.”

WARNING:

  1. A belt that is buckled up into the wrong buckle will not protect you properly. The lap portion of the belt could ride too high on your body, possibly causing internal injuries. Always buckle up your belt into the corresponding buckle.
  2. A belt that is too loose will not protect you properly. In a sudden stop, you could move too far forward, increasing the possibility of injury. Wear your seat belt comfortably.
  3. A belt that is worn under your arm is dangerous. Your body could strike the inside surfaces of the vehicle in an accident, increasing head and neck injury. A belt worn under the arm can also cause internal injuries. Ribs are not as strong as shoulder bones. Wear the belt over your shoulder so that your strongest bones will take the impact of a collision.

The lower part must adhere to the pelvis rather than the abdomen of the occupant. To fasten the lap belt pull slightly up the diagonal portion of the shoulder belt. To loosen the lap belt if too tight, tilt the latch plate and pull on the lap belt. A snug belt reduces the risk of sliding under the belt in an accident.

WARNING:

  1. A lap belt worn too high can increase the risk of internal injury in an accident. The belt forces will not impact on the strong hip and pelvic bones, but across your abdomen. Always wear the lap belt as low as possible and keep it comfortable.
  2. A twisted belt will not protect you properly. In a collision, it could even cut into you. Be sure the belt is straight. If you cannot straighten a belt in your vehicle, take it to a Service Centre immediately.
  3. Do not use devices (clips, fastenings etc.) that prevent the seat belts from laying close to the occupants bodies.
  4. Do not carry children on a passenger’s lap using only one seat belt for protecting both.
  5. Position the shoulder belt on your chest so that it is comfortable and not resting on your neck. The retractor will withdraw any slack in the belt.
  6. To release the belt, push the red button on the buckle. The belt will automatically retract to its stowed position. If necessary, guide the seat belt with your hand while it is rewinding, to prevent it from twisting.
