Fuses
CAUTION Never replace a fuse with one having a higher rating or with material other than a fuse because serious damage or a fire could result.
NOTE
Fuse rating and using circuit are de-scribed on each behind the fuse box cover. The fuses are designed to melt during an overload to prevent damage to the wiring harness and electrical equipment. The fuses are located in two fuse boxes.
One is located under the instrument panel behind the fuse box cover on the driver’s seat side. To remove the cover, pull it out.
- Spare fuses
- Fuse puller
The other one (main fuse box) is housed in the engine compartment. Also, the spare fuses and fuse puller are stored in the fuse box cover. Pinch the upper part of the fuse puller when removing it from the main fuse box.
- Good
- Blown
If any lights, accessories or other electrical controls do not operate, inspect the corresponding fuse. If a fuse has blown, replace it.
-
Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK”/ “OFF” position and turn off all electrical accessories.
-
Remove the cover.
- Determine which fuse may be blown. Look at the back side of each fuse box cover.
- Pull out the fuse with the fuse puller.
- Inspect the fuse. If it has blown, replace it with a spare fuse of the same rating.
- If the same fuse blows again, this indicates that its system has a problem. Contact your SUBARU dealer for repairs.
11-21. Installation of accessories
Always consult your SUBARU dealer before installing fog lights or any other electrical equipment in your vehicle. Such accessories may cause the electronic system to malfunction if they are incorrectly installed or if they are not suited for the vehicle.

FAQs
Fuses are safety devices that, upon detection of a fault, are intended to interrupt the electrical circuit. They protect different electrical parts in the Outback from harm caused by power spikes or short circuits.
The Outback’s fuse box is normally located in the engine compartment or beneath the dashboard on the driver’s side.
Visual examination is essential. A blown fuse frequently has a discolored appearance or a broken filament. There’s also a chance that the fuse looks melted or foggy.
Usually, all you’ll need is a pair of needle-nose pliers or a fuse puller. Some fuse boxes come with a fuse puller and extra fuses.
No, it’s imperative to use the right kind and amperage of fuse as directed by the owner’s manual. Fuse errors can cause damage or other electrical problems.
Absolutely, the Outback may use blade type fuses or other specialized fuses for airbags, ABS, and other systems.
If a fuse puller is not available, a pair of needle-nose pliers can often perform the same function.
Examine the fuse visually for any indications of damage or breakage. You can also use a multimeter to check the fuse’s continuity.
According to the directions in your owner’s manual, changing a fuse is an easy task. It’s always safe to consult a professional if you’re unsure.
When a fuse blows again after being replaced, there may be an underlying electrical problem. For a comprehensive inspection, speak with an electrician or mechanic.
Make sure the car’s ignition is off before working with fuses. To further avoid shocks, handle fuses without coming into contact with any metal objects.
It is advisable to perform routine maintenance with regular checks, particularly if you observe any electrical irregularities.
Yes, occasionally shared circuits in systems can cause a blown fuse in one system to affect seemingly unrelated systems.
Make sure electrical components are maintained correctly, and use the right accessories to prevent overloading circuits.
The best place to find out specifics about the locations of fuses and the amperage requirements in your Outback is the owner’s manual.
