The Bolt EV is a fully electric car manufactured by General Motors (GM). It was first introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2016 and officially unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit the same year. The Bolt EV is considered to be one of the first affordable long-range electric cars to be sold in the United States.
Development of the Bolt EV began in 2012, with a team of engineers led by GM’s CEO at the time, Dan Akerson. The Bolt EV was developed using the same platform as the Chevrolet Sonic but with significant modifications to accommodate the battery pack and electric drivetrain.
The Bolt EV’s battery pack has a capacity of 60 kilowatt-hours and is made up of 288 lithium-ion cells. The car has a range of up to 238 miles (383 kilometers) on a single charge and can be charged to 80% capacity in just 60 minutes using a DC fast charger. The car has a top speed of 93 miles per hour (150 kilometers per hour) and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96.5 kilometers per hour) in just 6.5 seconds.
The Bolt EV was initially launched in California and Oregon in December 2016, with a starting price of $37,495 before tax incentives. The car was later rolled out to other states, and by the end of 2017, it was available nationwide.
The Bolt EV has received numerous awards and accolades since its introduction. In 2017, it was named the North American Car of the Year, and it has also received awards for its safety features and overall value.
In 2020, GM announced that it would be launching a redesigned version of the Bolt EV, as well as a new Bolt EUV (Electric Utility Vehicle). The new Bolt EV features a refreshed exterior design and updated interior features, as well as improvements to the battery and electric drivetrain. The Bolt EUV is a slightly larger crossover version of the Bolt EV, with similar features and capabilities.
