Introduction
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) is a driver assistance system offered by Hyundai Motor Company to help drivers maintain their lane and reduce the risk of unintentional lane departure. LKA uses a camera mounted on the windshield to detect lane markings and steering sensors to monitor the vehicle’s position within the lane.
When the system detects that the vehicle is drifting out of the lane, it provides visual and audible warnings to the driver. If the driver does not respond to the warnings, LKA can apply corrective steering torque to keep the vehicle within the lane. The system can also adjust the steering torque based on the vehicle’s speed and the curvature of the road.
Hyundai offers different levels of Lane Keeping Assist on various models. The standard LKA system uses a camera to detect lane markings and provides warnings to the driver when the vehicle drifts out of the lane. The LKA system can be turned on and off by the driver using a button on the steering wheel.
The Advanced LKA system is available on select models and adds the ability to provide corrective steering torque to keep the vehicle within the lane. This system can also adjust the steering torque based on the vehicle’s speed and the curvature of the road. The Advanced LKA system is activated when the vehicle is traveling at speeds of 40 mph or higher.
The Highway Driving Assist system is available on select models and includes Advanced LKA as well as adaptive cruise control. This system can maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front and can automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed to match the flow of traffic. Highway Driving Assist is designed for use on highways and requires the driver to keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times.
Hyundai’s Lane Keeping Assist systems are designed to assist the driver and are not intended to replace the driver’s attention and judgment. Drivers should always keep their hands on the steering wheel and be prepared to take corrective action at any time.
